The La Salle men and women's swim and dive team competed at the Fall Frenzy this past weekend hosted by Queens University of Charlotte.
The women finished their weekend in 7th place and the men ended the competitions in 6th. Both squads will be back in action next week when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. for the Toyota US Open.
HOW IT HAPPENED –
- Andrea Savoca was the highlight of the competitions for the Explorers this weekend. On the same day, Savoca broke a previous La Salle program record in the men's 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 54.02 seconds. In the finals of the same event, Savoca broke his own record this time in a time of 53.76 seconds.
- That record breaking performance was good enough to get Savoca on the podium with a third-place finish.
- The women's 50-yard free has been dominated all season by Toni Rafferty, and she did not disappoint in this weekend's events. She took fourth place in a time of 23.46 seconds. Emma van Selm was also able to finish 13th in the consolation round of this event with a time of 23.77.
- Relays have also been a strong-point for La Salle this season for both the men and women. In the women's 400-yard medley relay the team of Toni Rafferty, Tori Fenn, Carlota Ungo, and Rosalia Marin Martinez finished in sixth at a pace of 3:46.57.
- On the men's side of this event the group of James Bowen, Andrea Savoca, Wes Miles, and Carter Perkins took sixth as well. They swam at a 3:22.21 pace.
- In the women's 200-yard medley relay Lauren Fenn, Carlota Ungo, Tori Fenn, and Toni Rafferty finished fourth in a time of 1:43.57
- With a finish of 1:31.10 in the men's 200-yard medley relay the team of James Bowen, Andrea Savoca, Zach Miller, and Carter Perkins for fifth in the event.
- Tori Fenn had a strong individual performance in the women's 100-yard butterfly swimming to a ninth-place finish in 56.53 seconds.
- The men's 100-yard butterfly proved to be another great result by Savoca. His sixth-place finish was done in 49.34 seconds.
- Sophomore Gabby Herbreder swam a 4:24.63 in the women's 400-yard IM, good enough for a sixth-place finish in the championship of that event.
- Perkins performed well in the men's 200-yard freestyle, finishing eighth overall in a time of 1:42.68.
- In the consolation round of the men's 200-yard backstroke, freshman Owen Reilly swam to a tenth-place finish. His time was 1:52.01.
- Rafferty swam strong in the women's 100-yard freestyle finishing in sixth place. She swam at a pace of 50.87 seconds.
- The women's 200-yard breaststroke consolation event had Ungo finishing ninth at a time of 2:18.62.
